Replacing a roof is a fairly hefty expenditure. For that reason, people often put it off for as long as possible. Unfortunately, there are some circumstances in which you should replace your roof right away, whether you want to or not.
Here are three ways to know you need a new roof:
Dips in the roof
It is easy to spot dips in the roof if you back far enough away from your house and look carefully. Dips in the roof are exactly what they sound like: areas in the roof that are dipping below other areas. They are often indicative of either rot or water swell in the foundation of the roof – both are signs that it is time to replace your home’s roof. Also, remember that your entire roof should be one flat surface. Otherwise, your roofing material will have a hard time holding and it will be easy for puddles of moisture to build up.
Damaged shingles
Shingles that are curling up generally indicate that a roof has reached the end of its life. This is because it is easiest (and most likely) for shingles to curl when they have lost the entirety of their UV coating. You also need to pay attention to the amount of granules your shingles are losing. If it is an excessive amount, then that is a tell-tale sign that your old shingles need to be replaced with new ones.
Leaks
You may be able to stretch the life of a leaky roof with repairs, but if you notice that the leaks seem to be larger, or multiplying, it is likely that you will need to replace your roof altogether. Keep in mind that some leaks are easier to spot than others. While a puddle in the floor is obvious, you also need to be on the lookout for discolorations on your ceiling. Any brown spots are indicative of moisture, which could be coming from a leaky roof.

Flying Colors Roofing ConnecticutProper ventilation will extend the life span of the roof of your Danbury CT home
Ventilation is one of the most important aspects to home construction. Inadequate attic ventilation can lead to numerous problems – roof failure being the most common. Proper ventilation allows your home to breath. Warm moist air rises and without adequate means of escape, will build up as condensation, causing serious problems in your roof and attic; including mold and mildew. Heat can also build up in the attic in excess of 150 degrees, baking the roofing material from underneath, and lead to premature aging and failure of the roofing material.
Unfortunately, homeowners can also experience a larger setback: having to pay to remove and/or install another roof because the manufacturer declares the warranty null and void after inspecting an improperly ventilated roof. A manufacturer’s warranty is greatly reduced or void if the roof is not ventilated properly.
If you’re considering a repair or saving for the larger expenditure of a full replacement, have your roof inspected for proper attic ventilation. An inspection can save you thousands of dollars in the future, extend the life of your roof and possibly reduce the risk of health problems from attic mold and mildew.

Five Important Questions To Ask Your Roofer

As far as home repairs are concerned there is virtually nothing that is more distressing for a homeowner than when they experience problems with their roof. The roof is instrumental in protecting your home and its belongings so if you have to witness rain water dripping it’s an unfortunate and probable certainty that you will need the expertise of a professional roofer.

We understand hiring a good, honest and competent roofer is a often difficult task and as a homeowner you must must be vigilant about the roofer you hire to undertake any necessary repairs. To help you we have provided five questions we encourage you to ask any roofer before you sign on the dotted line. And obviously at Flying Colors Roofing we definitely satisfy all of the criteria below.

Do You Have Liability Coverage, Current License And Workers’ Insurance?

The answers to each of these questions should be a resounding “yes”. As a follow up, ask to see the relevant paperwork for these three things. If the roofer is unable to produce them, the chances are he does not have them.

Can I Have A List Of References?

Seems obvious but often we are not asked for references. However we always provide them regardless because we are proud of the excellent referrals for which we have worked so hard to achieve.

How Much Is The Deposit On Roof Repairs?

We expect you should know how much up-front money we require before beginning the repairs, this is both for your own budget requirements and to ensure that there is good faith money on the table. We don’t expect you to pay for the entire cost before work begins and nor should any other contractor.

What Is The Time Frame For  Roof Repairs?

We find this question very important. We pride ourselves on starting and finishing on schedule so we are always ready to commit to an articulated deadline for completion of the repairs.

What Do I Need To Do To Prepare For Your Work Before You Begin?

Not to be overlooked and we insist on providing details so you can follow our guidelines. Adequate preparation can save both time and money as it will allow us to get started right away when we show up for work on the first day.
